Second Life Places
This page contains a list of locations that are worth paying a visit to in Second Life. From time to time new locations will be added onto the list and a more detailed description may get posted under the Places category.
There are many excellent places to visit in Second Life, and this list represents just a small number of what can be found.
Be aware however, that places in Second Life can change very rapidly! So some of these locations will change from time to time.
Fantasy
The Isle of Wyrms is a group of dragon orientated sims where you may find dragons of all shapes and sizes (and the occasional hedgehog too). The Isle features a magnificent cathedral, plus a number of artistically landscaped adjoining areas. There are 13 sims in total to choose from.

For the visitor, other than the buildings and vistas, this is the place to come to pick up a Dragon avatar. There is also an established marketplace offering goods for human and dragon alike. There is also an active community holding frequent events, including story circles and dancing with dragons.
Most of the buildings and landscape are scaled up for dragon avatars, so flying is the recommended method to get around.

The Elf Circle is a role-play area themed in the Elves of J.R.R. Tolkien. Role-play is, however, not mandated on most of the sims. The sims often have rugged terrain and therefore flight is often the best way to traverse these sims.
There are multiple things to do and see across the sims, marketplaces to shop in, boating on the seas, places just to sit and enjoy the scenery. As with the Isle of Wyrms, the Elf Circle provides many events and community activities.
There is a core of 13 sims, but the greater community comprises of approximately 30 sims.
Caledonia is a heavily integrated group of 19th Century Victorian and steam punk themed sims. Some sims practice role-play, others do not, but role-play is not mandated in those that do.

The sims range from Victorian towns, castles, forests, industrial areas and steam punk fantasy. As with other mature communities, Caledonia provides many events and community activities. There is a established steam railway covering much of the group, and trails suitable for horse riding elsewhere.

Gianfar Peaks is a group of 4 sims themed on the Dragonriders of Pern® stories by Anne McCaffrey. Currently the sims are in development, but polite visitors are welcome during the construction phase. Once the area is complete this will be a role-play area.

The Gianfar Peaks group of sims has a varied landscape and includes mountains, valleys, giant caves and volcanoes. True to the Pern theme there is also a Weyr, Hold, Harper Hall and Healer Hall providing the opportunity for many different types of role-play.

Science-Fiction
The Babylon 5 experience is set on a single sim. This is a role-play area set around the Babylon 5 TV series.
This area holds regular events, and offers the opportunity to become a starfury pilot!

Learning
The Ivory Tower of Primitives is the location to find tutorials about creating objects in Second Life. The tutorials are self-taught (not classes) and thus it is easy to move at your own pace or to come back and revise something. Each tutorial has copious examples. Many other locations have tutorials about building, but the tower has probably the best presentation of this information.

The construction of the Tower itself incorporates many of the techniques demonstrated in the tutorials. There is also a public sandbox provided next to the tower.
The particle lab provides training material on how to write scripts for particle effects. Similar to the Ivory Tower, the examples are laid out in a self-paced self-taught manner and examples are provided. If you want to learn how to make candle, volcano or even fireworks effects, this is the place for you.
Newbie Friendly
The Shelter provides a welcoming environment for those who are new to Second Life. The Shelter is essentially a socialising environment, with dancing, quizzes, competitions and many other activities.
There are a small selection of freebies and information on various aspects of Second Life including a more thorough list of places to visit.
